Dewberry Family Association

Genealogy Book Published!

The Dewberry Families of America and Their Ancestry is a saga of Dewberry families in America for the 338 years between 1665 and 2003. It is the result of 50 years of research by the authors, including Sidney Alton Dewberry’s full-time efforts for the past 12 years since he retired in 1991.

Working with a full-time assistant, they have assembled most of the descendants of Thomas Dewberry (the first to arrive from England in 1665) and followed the paper trail into most states, but mostly in the south. This book contains the names of approximately 10,000 citizens connected with the family through blood and/or marriage.

Down through time, the Dewberry name spelling was altered in many forms (Dewbre, Dewbree, Dewbury, Dubre, Dubree, Duberry, etc.) but in most instances continued intact in its original form. Most all Dewberrys in the United States came via Thomas. The authors were able to find only two other families that did not descend from him, and those families immigrated to the United States from England in 1864 and 1890.

There are many Dewberry families in England today, and a chapter is included with research on early Dewberrys in England. Most Dewberrys (or spelling variants) can easily trace his or her ancestry by the use of this book if they know their lineage back to 1930.

The Dewberry family has now spread all over the United States and into Canada. Although no attempt was made to research the Canadian Dewberrys, the authors believe they immigrated to Canada from the United States rather than directly from England.

The stories of the various Dewberry families are of hardship, tragedy, success, failure and all the things that pioneers to the New World would experience. Many of these stories have been included in this book. We hope you will find the book interesting and informative.

The book contains 637 pages in a two-column, 8.5" X 11" format and is 1.75 inches thick. It contains about 1 million words, weighs more than 5 pounds, and contains over 100 color photographs, several maps, and other graphics.
